Our Foundation
Founded by Barry and Alicia Plumpton in September 1999, Focus Construction Group has grown into a leading name in commercial construction, with four specialised companies.
Operating from a multi-purpose-built office and warehouse near Auckland’s North Western Motorway, where we store an extensive amount of our own plant and equipment and the innovative products we bring to the market. Focus is led by Barry, a qualified Quantity Surveyor, along with a team of seasoned professionals. Barry has driven the company's success, including the development of our own innovative aluminium partitioning and door systems.In 2013, long term employees
Mike Dixon and Nick Whittaker joined as directors and shareholders enhancing the leadership team while maintaining a personal approach to client partnerships.

Health & Safety
At Focus, safety is our top priority, guided by a strong Health and Safety Policy. All employees are Site Safe accredited, embracing our motto, "A Safe Site is a Good Site," and striving for Zero Harm.
We induct subcontractors on site-specific hazards and hold regular "Toolbox" meetings to address risks. Staff wear branded shirts and high-visibility vests for easy identification, while our Health & Safety Manager conducts regular spot checks.
For projects in educational or occupied sites, we implement additional measures like temporary fencing and clear hazard signage, especially for non-English speakers. We also provide briefings to raise awareness of site dangers.
Our safety management plan includes a master plan and handbook detailing procedures and hazard identification, along with relevant material safety data sheets for clients and schools to ensure all safety information is accessible.
In 2018 Focus was awarded The New Zealand Workplace Health & Safety Award for our Health and Safety management plan.

Barry Plumpton
Managing Director
Barry founded Focus in 1999, pushing for high quality, efficiency, craftsmanship, and hands-on management. Barry fosters strong relationships with clients and stakeholders, ensuring projects consistently exceed expectations. With over 35 years of experience as a Quantity Surveyor, Barry remains actively involved in project management and governance.

Nick Whittaker
Director
Nick joined Focus in 2001, bringing exceptional carpentry skills and over 30 years of experience in construction, interior fit-outs, reinstatement, and remediation projects. A key leader in the company, Nick became a Director in 2013 and as construction manager remains highly involved in project management, working closely with Site and Project Managers to deliver quality outcomes.

Mike Dixon
Director
Mike joined Focus in 2000 and brings over 20 years of commercial interior experience, including estimating, contract management, financial administration, and project oversight. Mike became a key member of the Focus leadership team and was appointed Director in 2013. As Director, Mike oversees all Interiors projects from the early stages and ensures costs are managed within budget throughout. He also mentors graduates, supporting their careers in quantity surveying.
